On this day in Horror History, Police found the bodies of 39 Heaven’s Gate cult members after a mass suicide. Under the leadership of Marshall Applewhite, the cult believed that death by their own hand was a gateway to an alien space craft following the Comet Hale–Bopp, where their souls would go to be a “level of existence above human”. Autopsies determined that the group had committed suicide by poisoning themselves with cyanide and arsenic, taking phenobarbital mixed with pineapple and chasing it down with vodka, and ultimately placing bags over their heads and passing away calmly in their bunk beds. With five-dollar bill and three quarters in each members pocket as to ensure they had their interplanetary toll fee, they would follow through with one of the most shocking displays of cult mentality of all time.

We came from the Level Above Human in distant space and we have now exited the bodies that we were wearing for our earthly task, to return to the world from whence we came — task completed.
